It's Let's Play time again with Gabriel's choice of game being Hugo 2: Whodunit, probably the most forgettable of an already pretty obscure adventure game trilogy. On this occasion I'm experimenting with just throwing up the whole video in one big lump to see if anyone really cares that much.

ReplyDeleteI enjoy these lets plays a lot, but I think I'd like them even more of you reviewed interestingly flawed good games like Maniac Mansion and the like rather than just flat out bad games like this. The Alex Kidd one was quite interesting because of how much it took the piss though.
Yahtzee, I agree with your inclination to keep these Let's Plays with one experienced, played-through-the-game-before viewpoint, and one seeing-it-for-the-first-time viewpoint. It's a unique take compared to most Let's Plays and leverages your having two commentators to maximum effect. And it's the only way to get comedy gold like your mistaking the cat for a writhing smoke cloud and watching with increasing befuddlement as Gabriel calmly starts rubbing catnip on bells.

I agree with Yahtzee too. I think you need someone who knows what they're doing to explain the mechanics of the game and someone who doesn't know *anything* to point out the utter ridiculousness of the game's logic.
ReplyDeleteEspecially as some viewers (including me) haven't even HEARD of these games. You let a lot slip by if you know what's happening.
Awesome as always, Yahtzee- keep them coming and don't change a thing! Also, have you considered playing "The Magic of Scheherazade?" Not as horrible as some games you've had to play but a very interesting adventure game/RPG/tactics hybrid. I never did manage to beat it because the ending was downright confusing, but it involves time travel and cat fairy!

Since everyone else is doing it i'll toss a suggestion out there, how about going for something else from the "edgy" period of the 90's like Harvester? Going off the Wiki page "Harvester contains various scenes of violence and gore; implied sexual intercourse, masturbation and S&M; murder; suicide; child abuse; profanity; cannibalism; prostitution; pedophilia; serial killing; gerontocide, sexually transmitted diseases; and stereotypes of homosexuals, Native Americans, Italians, and others." ReplyDeleteI really don't see the appeal of that game but there wasn't many good point and click game in that era. One of the things I pondered was at the end, where the idea of playing beneath a steel sky was decline. If only one of you should have ever played the game, you will quickly left with alot of restriction i recon. Why not let one play through and the other one tell him why he did it wrong... This reminded me so much of this terrible adventure game I played when I was young. Like the visuals and all that, so I just had to go a-googling after I watched this. I was unfamiliar with the genre at the time so I remember having great difficulty with it. I just attributed it to me being a stupid child.

And I thought I was the only person who had played Gold Rush by Sierra. That good old "under the blotter" chestnut.
