Alright, well, remember in the last post from all those months ago when I said I was working on another free game? Well, that's still the case. And here's a trailer I made for it while messing around with VirtualDub, which will suffice as an announcement, I suppose. Maybe watch the video in a resolution larger than this blog's format will allow because it looks a bit shit otherwise.
The game's called Poacher, as can be inferred, it's a Metroidvania-style platformer that's somewhat influenced by Cave Story amongst other games. You play Derek Badger, unflappable Yorkshireman, who stumbles upon a strange underground kingdom and gets caught up in a conflict between two mysterious magical races. I'm making it in Game Maker because current generation technology frightens me.
Sorry, I can't say when it'll be in a fit state for release. As I mentioned I'm waiting on some music, and I also need to get some proper focus testing done (don't volunteer, it's in hand). Also sorry it's not a playable demo. Trust me, I hate game trailers too, but most of this one actually shows gameplay. Sorry, also, for using Times Roman as the font in it. I showed it to someone and they said that was a horrible choice of font but I couldn't be bothered to go back to my source files.
And sorry for not updating for ages again. Rest assured the Mogworld audiobook project still weighs heavy on my mind. Sorry about going quiet on that, too. Basically I'm sorry. I-I'm sorry for everything.
Game maker happens to be the tool I use, it is an excellent piece of software, especially for 2d games.
Are you using the language or the basic D&D functions, I am fairly confident you can't get a game of that level using only D&D but I would like to know.
While I'm at it, do you have an account on the YYG website? I would like to friend you.
I'm looking forward to both, there's been far too few killer-rabbits in videogames. And Mogworld in your voice is surely a thing which will make most people feel funny in their pants.
Please tell me that these are "placeholder graphics" and this is not a representation of how the game is going to look. Conceptually, the game looks fantastic, but the art style just looks like something a 10 year old made in Game Maker. >>
Yahtzee, I've uploaded some generic dungeon music I "wrote" a while back. If you like what you hear you are free to use as you see fit. http://genericentity.blogspot.com/2012/01/generic-dungeon-music.html
Okay I can understand about the not updating thing, cause of shooter season 2011, and the audiobook, and the game; but that's not your fault, you're only one person trying to balance too many things at once.
Take a breather, list your priorities, and for christsakes pace yourself.
No good will come out of you running yourself into the ground.
Hope that helps a bit
P.S game looks great by the way and there's nothing wrong with the font.
Yahtzee, I hope you understand that if this game doesn't feature voicework from you as in that old Duke Nukem mod you made (Age of Evil?), a lot of people, including me, are going to be very very cross.
I was sold when I saw Yahtzee had made it, but I was doubly sold when he said it was influenced by cave story. Yahtzee plus Cave Story can't result in anything that isn't awesome.
Although I vowed to myself that I wouldn't point out the hipocrasy of making a trailer for a game, a few days before releasing a video saying that you hate trailers, I think this was quite well made. I look forwards to the game being released, whenever that it. If you ever need beta testers, let me know!
Hmmm, stumbled over here from RPS. Been keeping up with your game... roasts, for a while now. Anyway, I like your trailer. At first I was thinking "Wow this looks like crap.." But as I kept watching the game started looking more and more interesting! Looks like a cool gameplay mashup, keep it up.
Hi Ben, Poacher looks dead good, kinda like a playable Viz comic strip. I also think it's pretty damn impressive that you make your own games. It adds another layer of weight to your voice as a critic. Love your work, can't get enough of it.
Oh snap, I just bought the book-version of Mogworld. Didn't realize there was an audio book on its way. Doesn't stop me from getting the audio version too though, I may enjoy it in different ways and have two experiences... and the book looks better in my bookshelf ;D
Yahtzee you twat, nobody likes you and you should go die...sorry I was talking to another yahtzee. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS GAME!! And hearing your sexy voice while reading mogworld is making me hard... of hearing...which was a counter productive pun now that I think of it
You understand that to begin with region I suggested Buy Runescape Gold, earning funds by way of combat, well turns out that all those blood thirsty Spartans will need a number of items just before they set off on their trek for riches, and potions are one particular of the items they have to have Runescape Money. Make yourself wealthy and earn the nickname Dr.Feelgood at the same time.
This looks awesome :D
ReplyDeleteDon't be sorry, it looks fantastic. Not biased because I'm from Yorkshire at all...
ReplyDeleteI'm highly intrigued. Oh, and happy 2012!

I'm currently on holiday in Brisbane and have caught myself looking for an attractive british man in a cool hat.
ReplyDeletePlease please let him say "Ayup". What kind of music are you looking for?
ReplyDeleteWhy yet another game in which you, you know, jump and shoot? I'm genuinely interested in the answer.
ReplyDeleteLooks cool! I hope you're having enough fun making it to actually finish it.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to both, there's been far too few killer-rabbits in videogames. And Mogworld in your voice is surely a thing which will make most people feel funny in their pants.
ReplyDeleteLove your face Yahtzee

ReplyDeleteLooking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteNow then, focus test - ey? Now as a Yorkshireman myself I reckon I could be help with that. If I can suspend my disbelief then any fucker can.
ReplyDeleteShould you need an actual voice for Derek, ;D
Liking the look of the gameplay, not liking the look of the sprites, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteYou forgot to be sorry for using Lux Aeterna in the clip.. LoL
ReplyDeleteAwesome news :) Stop being lazy and make more games.
Yeah, this looks like another excellent game to add to you collection.
ReplyDeletePerhaps a DVD-ROM of all your games, plus a copy of the Mogworld audiobook?
All for the nice low price of, say, $50?

Jesus Christ, cheer the fuck up, Yahtz. You've never been more successful yet I've never seen you act this self-loathing.
ReplyDelete...even sarcastically.

ReplyDeleteNot to sound like a needy child screaming for milk from their mother's tit but ... post a preview of the Mogworld audio project plz!!
ReplyDeleteAs a yorkshireman and indie games developer, I'm glad to see more Yorkshire based protagonists in games :D

ReplyDeletethis is an accurate depiction of what it is like to live in yorkshire
ReplyDeleteMore games need to quote the Red Dwarf Smeg Ups.
ReplyDeleteLookin good Yahtzee.
ReplyDeletecan't wait
ReplyDeleteWell now I have to change my last name to Badger.
ReplyDeleteI think you should stick to writing, Yahtzee.
ReplyDeleteWhy won't you modify AGS's source code for your own needs now that's it's been realesed Yahtzee?

ReplyDeleteThis looks fun as hell. Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteLooks like an awesome game in the making. XD And having been to Yorkshire myself, thank you for the horrible...horrible...horrible flashbacks.
ReplyDeleteAnd damn straight you should apologise. For everything? Including the toast I burnt this morning?
Looks interesting. It would have been funny if Derek's sprite had its little fingers extended.
ReplyDeleteThis looks neat! I will definitely play it, and lay out a few of my sparse, wicked USian dollars to do so.

ReplyDeleteOh god, I want it
ReplyDeleteThe term "I just caked me pants" sealed the deal for me. Yahtzee you magnificent mad bastard...

ReplyDeleteI'd give this a blast yeah! You've sold it to me Yahtzee!
ReplyDeleteThe graphics look pretty ok. The animation on the rabbit guts is superb!
ReplyDeletei like your use of requiem for a dream lol

ReplyDeleteAudio book? Mogworld audio book? Hurray! The very prospect makes my eardrums tingle in anticipation. :D
