Poach Harder

The updated version of Poacher, version 1.1, is now available! I was originally only going to fix the major bugs but the Escapist were away on Easter holiday for a few days and I figured I might as well use the time to put in some new features. So here's the updated download link (updated on the original post also). And if you need convincing, here's what's new:

- Bug fixes, including the crash caused by using grenades too quick, the right-screen-edge exploit someone helpfully demonstrated on Youtube (sorry if you were having fun with that one), an error that occurs when fighting Rebecca's phantom daddy in the Abyss with only three grenades, and a couple of other minor tweaks. I also made some tweaks to one particular bit in the Great Library that was widdling on a lot of pies. Speaking of making things easier, though:

- NEW FEATURE: Optional easy mode! Well, basically you have 5 health at the start, removing two health upgrades later in the game, so it's more like a 'get settled in mode'. But it does also increase the drop rate of pickups from dead enemies and hopefully that'll be enough. You know. If you're a wuss.

- NEW FEATURE: Customisable keyboard controls! You asked for it, you got it. I didn't want to have to put some big artful menu system for changing the controls, so I hit upon a pleasingly retro idea. There's now a text document in the game folder called controls.txt which the game reads the keyboard controls from, and it's designed so that you can edit it to put in whatever controls you please. But back up the original file before editing and follow the instructions carefully because the game is quite picky about formatting. No support for customising joystick/controller buttons at this point, though. Sorry.

- NEW FEATURE: Achievements! Love them or hate them, they at least give you something to do when you've 100%ed with the secret ending. There are 20 in total to collect and after one playthrough the ones you've yet to unlock will appear on the intro screen. Rest assured that there are no mandatory story achievements besides the ones for beating the game, 'cos too many games just give you an achievement for beating each chapter and I hate that shit.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Save games for the old version will NOT work with 1.1. This is unavoidable, I'm afraid, so you'll have to start the game over. Consider this the opportunity you need to shoot for the secret ending. Haven't found that, yet? Well, here's your hint: the secret ending will only appear for the pure of heart.

That download link again in case you missed it: Poacher version 1.1
. Some security software apparently has been spreading ugly rumours about it being malware, but they just get uppity about installers that haven't had the thumbs up from the Man. You trust me, right?

If you're not interested in Poacher because you prefer Cooking Mama or games that will work on a Mac, then there's also a new Let's Play from me and Gabe coming soon. I'm going to go upload it now and edit this post when it's ready. Watch this space!

EDIT: Specifically, watch this space. Preferably in full screen:

  1. Oh my fuck the secret ending means no killing!!(?) No really, is that what it is? 'Cause I can't think of any other explanation for the 'pure of heart' thing, because, I suck at references of any kind and my brain is so small you can fit into a usb slot...

    2. Don't kill the bunnies at the start, don't kill the zombie Blemineg (that one's a bitch, especially in the giant worm boss when they start spawning) and don't shoot Gamey when he finds you at the beach.

    3. So basically don't do the three things that the voice in the Abyss represses you for doing. And then, good luck fucking yourself over the secret boss. That guy is worst than the giant jellyfish.

You could've seen this issue coming and made your own save system to avoid it but whatever. Captain Hindsight out.

  5. ON DREAMWEB: I literally love the fact that You and Gabe decided to do the LP for this particular game. Dreamweb started my love for Cyber Punk and I played it 6 years ago for the last time.

ON POACHER: Great retro Platformer. Challenging is something I like. Thanks for v 1.1. Achievements are something I'm looking forward to. Also great thing that You allowed Key-Configs. My small finger was killing me after 5 hours of playing (laptop keyboard). Too bad that game-saves do not work but I can cope with that. I really want to see the secret ending but I was hoping I could hit 100% using one save data. "For the pure of heart" you say... Hmmm... that's strange. I have not killed any white bunnies playing v 1.0 (even the Narrator was shocked) for the first time and yet I got "Good Ending" (That's the regular one, isn't it?). I killed like 10 Zombie Blemineg though... Hmmm... Will need to try few different varieties.

ON POACHER BUGS: I am not sure if it was mentioned before or if you got it fixed but when in Spyrite Mines, right after destroying 'Blue Spyrite Cubes' with your spirit grenades and rushing to the right (before unlocking underwater shooting) you may get stuck in a room with two "Round-Tentacly Purple Thingies" which shoot "Other - Smaller Purple Tentacly Thingies" (Gimme a break :P I forgot the name) located under the water and your death is unavoidable. Just to let you and others know.

Thanks once again and sorry for spam

It seems fixing the first bug has caused this one to appear. I couldn't say exactly what causes it to happen, but it tends to happen when I've held down the "X" button to heal for a little too long, most often during boss fights, so I'm jumping around and firing, and most likely, getting hit goes towards causing it.

Also, 20 Acheivements done. They were fun, but a couple of them have some nifty mechanics attached that really should be explained up front (Like "Keepy Uppy").

  12. There's a bug in version 1.0, maybe you've already fixed it, maybe not, I don't know. Anyway, hammering on the grenade button when you're out of them makes the grenades variable go into negative numbers. I noticed it during the jellyfish boss fight!

  13. Just updated to v1.1 and found a bug. (applicable to v1.0 as I didn't notice it first time around) First black pudding reward vanishes if you leave the room and come back. I presume it's because it behaves like any other drop as opposed to a 'placed' item.

  14. I'm having a bit of trouble with my suspension of disbelief here, are there really pick-up trucks in England? Because when I went there I did not see a single real truck anywhere in Europe. There weren't even any real semis, they used "cargo vans" instead.

    --------------

Anyways since I know you love feedback and even more so following links left for you in the comments section here were my thoughts on completing the 1.0 version.
    http://extra-credits.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2107

With some added stuff just for you. The story I really enjoyed, not to mention it was pretty original and told well. And even any parts I didn't like I'm not in any position to criticize. The karmatic justice bit at the end was obviously a jab at the common gamer mentality of "kill everything you can" so it gets a pass. Otherwise I would say that it falls a little flat.
It would be like if god suddenly yanked you into purgatory and told you "Wearing red shirts is wrong! Now you must fight a giant monster version of every red shirt you've worn throughout your life." Yes I'd be pretty sorry I'd worn so many red shirts after a dozen attempts but it still wouldn't make a lot of sense.

Oh, and another thing, I did rather like the boss fights. even if the Jellyfish gave me quite the headache because I went for that one first (also when I found out that you have to go back to the save room on the left, lest you die and be forced to fight him again). Aside from a couple attacks which if used in sequence at the right moments seemed impossible to defend against, each one was a really interesting puzzle trying to come up with the best strategies.

  16. Oh no, I just accidentally wrecked my save file... I was at 28% going against the purple worm boss thing and I died. I was screwing around in the save room after I respawned, I had got the wall jump fairly recently so I tried to see if I could wall-jump up the save room portals on top and I did, winding up above a different slot... when I died I respawned at that other location (22%) and then I stupidly went back down the 28% slot hole and ruined that save... This was on 1.0. If anyone happens to have a 28% 1.1 save file I'd really appreciate it, I don't care about coins or whatever.

The only other real thing I want in the game is a medium window size- f4 cycles through smallest, largest, and fullscreen, I wish there were an option about halfway between the smallest and the largest one.

  17. The game is great but highly frustrating with its difficulty. As a guy who was weened on PC platformers I like it for being retro, but I alternate between loving the game and raging on it massively.

The one thing I have to say is that I think the powers are pretty much useless, save the mines and the healing power. I know it's kind of a tradition for powers like those to be ineffective against bosses so I can't complain too much but I purchased the shield first simply to give me a hand during boss fights and that turned out to be quite a waste.

In general, I think for what they do none of them are worth the cost of two grenades (I suppose except the cluster-bomb - maybe that could be just an upgrade for the grenades instead) and the shield seriously irritated me for lasting such a short time with such a long charge period.

Hopefully I can beat this thing tomorrow. God damn.

  18. Yahtzee,

Loving your latest creation, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put a save point after the first stage of the secret boss. I've learned to beat the first part with my eyes closed (no pun intended) so now it's a massive waste of time. Meanwhile I'm not even close to beating the second stage, where one is subject to sudden death. It's going to take me a lot of attempts to get past stage 2, and that means an awful lot of faffing about in stage 1 (2.5 minutes per attempt). If you don't create a save point I fear I'll lose my sanity. Actually I probably lost my sanity back when I beat the game for a third time and still didn't reach the secret ending, but that's beside the point. Same goes for any subsequent stages. Much appreciated :D

  19. Have yet to play the 1.1 version but have found a few bugs that no one else seems to have noticed yet at all, including somewhat of an exploit.

Main bug: When using the spirit of power upgrade, if you charge the shot, and then fire the shotgun, without letting go of x something interesting happens. The charged disc graphic will freeze into place, so you can move around independently of it, and any enemy touching it will take massive damage, which you can exploit to kill bosses very quickly, and when you tire of it you can simply release x and the beam will fire as normal.

Other bugs; During the first screen of the Abyss Ascent following the Abyss Chase, if you pause the game, wait and then resume multiple grenade shots will be launched all at once. I assume that whilst pausing the game stops the shots launching, the timer marking the interval between shots does not.

Not sure if this is a bug or a feature for difficulty, but, during the underwater boss fight the boss seems to experience some drift, so that areas which are normally safe to lurk in, you can sometimes get hit in. If that is a feature I'd say it makes an already difficult boss fight more so than it need be.

Anywhose, hope this is of use!

  20. Took me about 2 days of on and off trying, but I finally (no joke) pounded a cup of intensely strong Yorkshire Gold tea and beat the damnable secret boss. As a 3 time veteran of the Sacred Grounds in Cave Story, I must curse the ground you walk upon, Ben Croshaw. Intensely difficult, but success was actually quite satisfying.

I will say the instant death sections are somewhat bullshitty in a game which hasn't featured it at all before that point, but now that I've succeeded, it's hard not to be just fine with other chumps suffering through it as well. Overall, very good game (well-written, good characters, good difficulty), and it was almost as enjoyable as Cave Story.

Small snippets of advice for those having trouble with the secret boss:

    - Fire off a few spirit bombs at the eyes to make the first phase go quicker. By the time you've fallen and died 30 times in the second part, the eyes won't give you any trouble at all in terms of health. Making the 1st phase pass more quickly will give you more practice at the 2nd. Save a few charges and make sure you have decent enough health, however.

    - In the 2nd phase, the eyes will start firing off lightning after the face's 5th bounce. Count 'em off, and then be ready to start jumping.

    - I found it very helpful to *occasionally* eat one of the lightning bolts in order to survive what may have been a tricky/risky jump. This is when the boss has less health and fires them off more rapidly, and maybe you jumped all the way to the end and the next platform hasn't spawned yet. All you need to do is stand on the right half of the platform, facing right, and the knockback and scrolling motion will keep you from falling. Obviously don't do this too much, or, y'know, you won't have any health left =\

    - I can't confirm this, but I don't think there's any rush or time limit to the third phase? It's not like the encroachment and instant death of the teeth in the second phase. This basically means take your time and find the right moments to get your shotgun jump in to land on platforms and avoid the little blue bullets. I think you can also wall jump off of the edges, but I was never brave enough to try.

    1. Thanks Justin,

I'm up to the secret boss and to my dismay I've just discovered the 3rd part. Given that you and others have already done the hard yards, I'll have to retract my previous request for a save point and just get on with it.

I'll pretend the boss is Yahtzee ;)

      Delete
    2. I always figured the boss was an interpretation of Yahtzee making the game. the first phase was staring at the screen and coding so much his eyes exploded, then the second phase was screen at the screen and trying to eat the keyboard, and the third phase was trying to rouse himself from bed the next morning to do it all again.

A tip for the second form is to wait until he starts firing lightning, and shotgun jump two platforms at a time to avoid them. you will be able to stay on screen for the two first batches of lightning. once you have finished those two, the rest of the lightning sections should just be jumping one platform at a time per bolt, and you will be able to stay around mid screen for the last 3 batches. Remember to dodge the little bullet spammers during the last 2, so shotgun jump if you have to. don't ever try going backwards, Derek doesn't move fast enough to reach a platform.

And yes, the third phase has no time limit. I found the best strategy is to stay at the very very top, and only shoot at the face when it has receded to the very bottom of the screen to give you extra time to dodge the resulting shrapnel. The shotgun will extend all the way to the bottom, so there's no point going lower. also you can use the down shot to boost you to the next platform, as it will give you just enough lift, Rinse and repeat.

Also have a bug. Two, actually. Both have to do with the secret end boss. The first is that if you pause, while the floor is collapsing, it keeps collapsing, and you die as soon as you unpause.

The second is that none of the autosaves after you beat him, while you're climbing back out of the [SPOILER], meaning if you beat him and die halfway out, you have to fight him all over again. Very aggravating.

  27. Finally! Finished it at 100% (1.0), good ending, though not the secret one. Congratulations for this marvellous piece of retro gaming. Apart from occasional rage sparks, I really enjoyed Poacher! It's a very hard game, but progression and exploration are very rewarding. Gameplay is very varied and every new section of the game feels fresh. No copy paste, fun puzzles in the mines, clever platforming, especially in the forest, etc. The atmosphere of where you get sent after the sixth tea cup is very immersive for a 2D game. Controls felt very natural too.

The artwork and storyline is also very entertaining.

Thumbsup for all of these : Gameplay, difficulty, variety, humour, artwork, platforming challenges, controls, storyline, characters and critters, exploration rewards, progression rewards, etc.

There were very few things not to taste, but I won't go into them right now, the shining parts of the game overshadows them by a long shot.

Holding down the grenade button and firing the shotgun upwards may cause the grenade to explode while Rebecca is holding it (may be more likely while moving left or right). 46. Mini review

The good thing about Poacher that it's exceptionally polished for a freeware title. The game is smooth to control and mostly bug free. It has plenty of content, with secrets and upgrades to discover. The puzzle rooms and obstacle courses are very intelligently designed.

But despite this goodness the game is marred with some problems. First, it's just too damn difficult. True that finally nailing a sequence of jumps brings about a lot of satisfaction. But I really only have limited time to hone my platforming skills and Poacher requires too much of it. But the real reason I abandoned the game is that the story did not motivate me enough to overcome the adversity.

The writing is very slick but it is somewhat lacking on a conceptual level. There is a fish-out-of-water framework, where a person from our reality is drawn into another one and becomes a hero. But our titular Poacher does not really work in that role. He's no everyman, but rather some British stock charachter, who is completely disinterested with the battle of good and evil he's been drawn into. I guess that was supposed to be a source of humour as a contrast between the high-fantasy and the down-to-earth, but Derek's apathy doesn't add any interesting perspective or commentary.

From what I gathered a person from Yorkshire countryside is supposedly the equivalent of a redneck and speaks in a heavy dialect. But this overreliance on British stereotypes is pretty unconvincing for somebody not well aquainted with such a thing. And poachers are generally hardly likable.

So given the author's obviously high skills in both level design and writing it's a bit sad to see this game fall short of the previous one, the really nice Art of Theft.

And one more thing, a great opportunity was missed to give the character a skill to shoot backwards, Blackthorne style.

  48. Fine job on the game, Yahtzee. I really enjoyed it. It's nice and polished and lacks overworld music here and there, but the music that's in the game is superb and climaxes wonderfully at the secret boss fight. Well done.

There is a pretty crucial glitch I experienced in the secret boss fight: after the first match, the platforms don't appear. This I think is somehow related to this message about an error in the grenadescript:

    In script grenadescript:

    1. I also wanted to add that I especially enjoyed each of the character's writing, and the overall light nature of the narrative. It's perfectly fitting for a retro action game like this. Funny, quirky, not heavy or angsty. Good stuff. Rebecca was a cute companion and Derek is the funniest protagonist I've ever played.

      SPOILER

It's doubly hilarious to see the ancient god of judgment be brought down by the short-spoken Yorkshire equivalent of Elmer Fudd.

  49. Oh! Suggestion for Poacher v1.2 if it ever comes out: Boss Rush mode! I just really want to fight the secret boss again mostly, without having to replay the whole game.

Not that I won't. Maybe I'll upload a YouTube playthrough of it without live commentary.

  50. For some reason every now and then when I die the game will keep going and I have to reset my computer to close it because I can't do anything. I can't open the map or the pause screen. Please fix that and also if you wall jump on the save room and go out the closed side you leave the room like normal. It doesn't do anything ,but it's just fun to do.

  52. bug report:

entering the dark realm, if you don't kill the brain thing to the left offscreen first they shoot you during the cutscene into the next area and the game crashes.

  53. Wanted to reiterate the fact that if a key is held down through a screen transition, the game doesn't notice it until you release and press again, which causes problems in a few places.

Also, absent a way to customize joypad controls, could you add a way to disable them? I'd be fine using xpadder to set up the controls, but I can't get rid of the existing bindings, which aren't really usable with my controller.

  54. BUG:

Dying to the secret boss sometimes causes a saving error. (I'd copy-paste the code, but I just beat it and overwrote that save. No regrets, though, considering it was done with 3 health.)

    1. Oh, forgot to add that the error occurs when the save reloads, and that ignoring it just lets you fight the boss as if nothing happened. So I guess it's not that big a deal, but maybe I just got lucky.
