Hello There

Welp, guess it's pretty cocky of me to assume anyone's still checking this blog on a regular basis, but for what it's worth, I haven't forgotten it. Just seems like all I do is post links to new ZPs and XPs on the Escapist, and that doesn't make a whole lot of sense when more people check the Escapist regularly than they do this site. So I'm not going to bother anymore. In future, assume there's a new Zero Punctuation video every Wednesday (Thursday for me) and a new Extra Punctuation column every Tuesday (Wednesday for me, fucking international date line). If there isn't, I am probably already being sued for not fulfilling my contract.

Fact is, I've put off updating this site and doing pretty much anything except my professional obligations because I've had another flare-up of the old depression that's been building up for quite some time. I'm on top of it, though. Don't feel you need to post sympathies because there's nothing more excruciating than people walking on eggshells around - oh, you weren't planning to post sympathies? Oh. Well, good. Good, actually.

Before you close this tab, O bored and inattentive reader, there's a couple of upcoming things on the horizon that may interest you. I've been working on another freeware game. That's a redundant statement because I'm always doing that, but I'm close to finishing one for once.

I'm just waiting on some more testing and some music tracks from the ever-willing Mark Lovegrove, and it won't be long before it's in a releasable state. It's a platform game that I've been making in Game Maker, for want of expanding my knowledge of free game development tools for retards, with a Metroidvania-style explorative sprawl to its nature. I may have dropped hints about it in Extra Punctuation here and there. I'll keep you posted.

The other interesting thing is an update on Mogworld. The digital edition is still pending, for all you people with a really big guilt thing over dead trees, but as I've said before, that one is out of my hands. If you want someone to nag, you'd be better off nagging the publishers Dark Horse directly. Tell them you and all your friends will buy the digital edition and they'll probably make enough money for them to have fresh flowers in the lobby every single day. That might help.

But after a certain amount of nagging on my part Dark Horse have also released to me the audio book rights of Mogworld so that I can record it myself and publish it independently. So, not to put too fine a point on it, I'm going to be doing that. It's just a matter of summoning the effort to do so, which for reasons explored early in this update may be harder than it sounds, but I think if I advertise it here it'll put pressure on me. Also, have to figure out how I'm going to do the chat log bits in spoken form.

So, yay, audio book version of Mogworld coming soon. You'll be able to listen to the text in my dulcet tones while jogging or murdering or whatever you do. It'll probably tide you over until my second novel comes out WHOOPS YOU DIDN'T HEAR THAT

  1. I have this blog on my Reader but didn't have your column at Escapist. Now I do :)

Actualy I subscribed to this blog just to know when there was going to be a new game. Good to know! Screenshots?

    1. sweet. Yahtzee just upload a post showing game play footage. Looks like it will be a fun metroid inspired game.

  2. I still have an RSS subscription to this thing apparently, and I love audiobooks. So there's that!

  3. Mogworld on Audiobook should be cool, will be interesting to see (hear, rather) what solution you come up with on the chat logs. For some reason I'm imagining them in a synthesized computer voice, but there's probably a better solution than that.

  4. Having a reader gadget on the iGoggle page works wonders for following inconstant blogs.

  5. I'm certainly up for an audio edition of mogworld as that'll be something to listen to on the bloody long commute in to the office.

Oh and thanks for causing me to listen to pretty much every DDDBMT track out there. I mean naming the imps Dave, Dee, Dozy, etc, etc.

As for depression - seen that a few times and its a git. good to hear you are on top of it.

  6. If you record the audiobook yourself try to speak slower than the speed you use on ZP videos (just a reminder), for the chat you can try to imitate the voices and you don't actually need as many voices as the characters just some distinct ones for the main characters and the others can be generic. Also don't forget to be sure that you record it.

    ReplyDelete
  7. ...or, if you don't feel like recording it yourself, you could have Betty White do it.

  8. Actually check this for updates almost every other day... which isn't at all a statement about my social life.

    Anyways.

I shamefully haven't read Mog, but I do admit I have been waiting for the audiobook version. I've fallen in love with the medium since I heard Lenny Henry do Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman; an absolute treasure trove of distinctive voices and comic timing in that, and I know full well how deep your voices-well runs (only seen your extra bits on ZP and various assorted interviews, true, but you clearly have talent in the vocal department. Though that's probably more clearly demonstrated by your sumptuous piles of cash, but I digress. Phew, that was a long parenthetical statment, wasn't it?)

    Anyways.

Glad to hear the site's revamping from a ZP/XP update log. I spent the greater part of the last two weeks pouring through the archives of reviews, ramblings, essays, flowcharts, comics, short stories, so on,laughing my very figurative ass off, so my fingers are crossed so hard I really only have three of them that something to their effect will appear.

As far as getting all non-motivated, yeah, it's a bit of a bastard having to go through the grin like you do. It does tend to only take one new idea to get the blood flowing again though. Then it all follows from there.

Anyways, enough writing things no one will probably ever read... *sob*

Cheers to ye, and may the electrons flourish in thyne cranium!
    ~Steven

  10. I can't imagine recording an audio book in the style that you do a ZP in. I tried using the ZP style of narration in one of my video projects for a class and I simply couldn't do it from a script. I would always flub a line here and there. In the end, I gave up and fed the damned thing into a text to speech program and am living with the results...

  12. Would surrounding you by titties and whiskey help bring a smile to your face? I'd gladly pay for my share, think of it as thanks for all the hours of joy you've given your viewers over the years. Your work has certainly cheered me up, especially while recovering from surgery.

  13. Will you be putting out a new Show and Tell anytime in the near future?

  14. Nooo, bad Anonymous! We want want to be listening to Yahtzee's sultry voice and none other will do!

I've been meaning to get a copy of Mogworld, but somehow I haven't got around to it yet. Would it be incredibly dorky to get you to sign it at the Mana Bar when I finally do?

  15. Animated chat logs would be pretty rad.

  16. How curious that everyone has followed your instruction about not "hearing" the statement about a new book. Alas, I do not 'squee' and therefore you shall have to look elsewhere for raving excitement and ego stroking about this news.

However, I am intrigued. I can at least give you intrigued. Or would it be that you gave me intrigue ... Hmm.

I also feel the overwhelming urge to ask how one can have a legitimate Freudian slip and acknowledgement of such in a single submission.

I'm sure your game will be released 'when it's ready'. Look forward to playing it.

  17. Oi! Sorry that you've been depressed.

I know you told people not to post sympathies, but I don't give a crap about what you say, jerk.

I mean, yeah, I just didn't listen. Whatever.

  18. I have Extra Punctuation, Zero Punctuation and this blog in Google Reader. I rarely visit The Escapist for anything other than Z/NP, because not much there interests me.

I, too wish for a Betty White audiobook of Mogworld. Haha.

  19. Great news for those who have forgotten how to read after all those not-really-mind-challenging games that producers come up with these days ^_^.
Anyway, whatever you choose to do in the future, followers will be followers (or stalkers?) and haters gon' hate. Good luck with your second novel WHOOPS DID I SAY THAT OUT LOUD?!

  20. Hmm, maybe see a psychologist then? They are actually really good at helping with depression.

    ReplyDelete
  21. No eggshells, but best of luck with the depression - it's a tough road and the damn stuff never quite seems to sod off. (That's not sympathy, that's just me complaining. =) Glad you are still managing to get all the videos and that online, I've had a few bouts with depression that feel a bit easier with a massive dose of the ZP & LRR back catalogues.

  22. Record each word used in the chat logs separately, and then string them together for a your-voice-but-in-artificial-mode effect. Or something. I 'unno.

  23. What about Show and Tell podcasts? I miss those.

  24. This blog is one of the many tabs that I have come up when I start up Firefox.

  25. When I read Mogworld I already imagine Yahtzee's voice. Strange I just noticed that now. Same goes with XP. I probably will end up buying the audio version anyway so I can update the one already in my own subconscious.

As for the digital one... meh. Seems a bit redundant to own the story twice in the same medium (audio is different from text). Now we need someone at Dark Horse to make a comic out of it so we can get a visual medium. (A movie may be a bit too optimistic)

    ReplyDelete
  26. I shall avoid the sympathies (I don't do those) and kinship (that I could do, but won't) and say I'm glad you posted!

Your blog resides in my Google Reader, where it conveniently reminds me of the reason for the gaping hole that slowly grows inbetween ZP. Love your stuff, forget things easily, oh well, never mind.

Did not know about Mogworld though, I must correct this!

    ReplyDelete
  27. You mean the author of the book where the main character's main motivation is to die is depressed? I am shocked.

Great news about the audiobook-- ever since you did the reading of the short story a while back I've been hoping more audio content would be produced.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I wish you well, I had this on my reader hoping for another podcast, am I the only one? should I forget about it?

And: stop acting like anyone who likes your work is a worthless imp, you douche with talent; some of us wish you well, so what? Take it like a man, worse things have happened to more committed emos.

You might be able to dictate the terms of your depression to your friends, but this is the internet.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Mogworld was great! I've never been a big fan of audio books, but if you'll do it yourself, I might give it a try.

Ansonsten wünsch ich dir noch alles Gute. Lass dich nicht unterkriegen.

    ^^

    ReplyDelete
  30. I can't believe I still haven't got round to reading Mogworld, luckily if this audiobook idea pans out I won't have to! Hurray for the apathetic internet culture!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Stop this pathetic whining right now, you sissy man! Have you actually forgotten that YOUR OWN SITE has an RSS feed? Honestly!

And who releases freeware games in this day and age, anyway? How do you expect people to pirate something if it's already available at no cost? You unfathomable egoist!

And and and ... AND where are those podcasts, huh? Have you actually murdered Fuckbastard McGee or just the recording equipment?!

    Get well soon, darling.

  32. Are you planning on doing any more podcasts? Because I thought they were fantastic!

  35. I do check this blog about once a week. I've enjoyed those Show & Tell podcasts so much that I'm always looking for a new one.

I'm also looking forward to checking out the game.

Whenever I'm feeling depressed I like to listen to Bill Hicks. Always does the trick.

  36. An audiobook would be just awesome. And so would another novel.

And so would another Show and Tell podcast. I really enjoy your rubbish. Don't stop.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'd say "cheer up" but:

    a) That's the singularly worst and most ill-informed response to depression

    and

    b) That'd be your career goosed.

Another novel sounds awesome - hoping for a manga-style Imp vs Imp, but sadly doubt it...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Didn't he announce his next novel a year ago now?

    ReplyDelete
  39. good to know that you pulled through. i kinda know one or two things about depression from personal experience http://talkofalltrades.blogspot.com/. i know you said that you didn't want us to post sympathies but too bad ;)

    ReplyDelete
  40. And to add to the gibber, I'd like to hear more podcasts, but I understand that playing videogames for a job, owning a bar, writing professionally and now recording an audiobook on top of the voice work you already do, asking for another podcast is kinda like asking you do balance a chainsaw on your head whilst log-rolling. And Holy Run-on sentence Batman that was a terrible post. But I hope everyone who reads other people's posts (ie no one) will try to understand why Yahtzee isn't raring to do another podcast or any of that shit. Also just to piss you off, glad to hear you are doing better Yahtzee. Also why the hell do people call you "mate" when they probably don't even know you?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Not going to give you a "oh no darlin it gets better cheer up sunshine u can do it", but I've been dealing with depression since age ten or so and I feel you. Herbal supplements, therapy, exercise, vitamins, eating right, being around friends and loved ones, stuff like that has helped me a lot, but it's always a lingering thing.

Better to be witty and smart with soul-draining depression problems than boring and milquetoast and happy, though. I own Mogworld but I haven't read it yet. I look forward to the audio book and second novel.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Depression is the self involved whining of the small child that lives inside you (why we keep a small child inside us i'll never know). You'll get over it whether you like it or not. Unless you perpetuate the self involved whining inside you. You'd do better to bitch at length at a blog than to bitch at length to yourself. Anyways, in short, man up. Its what i'd to do to kill mine.

On to something far more interesting. the audiobook. Excellent news mate. I, like many others i am sure, have all but given up the nasty habbit of "reading" as I believe it is colloquially known and instead rest my full attention only on what is most sparkly and shiny from moment to moment. For the dialogue bits I would recommend a slight change in tone, you don't have to deviate greatly from character to character for it (have you seen the watchmen audio graphic novel?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSJA37nnSxI&feature=related
One voice actor doing all these different voices. it never even occurred to me to question that it was the same person cos the mind will fill in the blanks for the reader. There is much to be said for just doing the female voices and getting on with it. If there was an addition of another voice it would likely ruin the flow. You'll probably have to spend some time working on a female voice though. For the men a simple change of tone should do the job though. Cant wait to give you lots of lovely money for it dude.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Your audio version of EXHAUSTION FROM HAVING SEX WITH A MINOR was a joy to listen to (especially Volger's voice), so of course I look forward to the excellent MOGWORLD getting the same treatment.

And I must congratulate you in managing to keep up the quality of your creative output despite the depression.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Where is the audio version of exhaustion from having sex with a minor? I could google if but if I have to pay I will, and I try not to pirate stuff from people who actually work hard on it. Anything that insane done by you I have to listen too.

Also another show and tell whenever you can would be amazing. If I ever get out the US to Australia I'll definitely stop by the bar and be harassed by you. Seems like a thing that needs to be on everyones bucket list.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Just get Gabe to do the other voices. Also, get him to do the female characters.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Also, I bought the book, will buy the digital, and the audiobook versions.

    ReplyDelete
  47. As someone currently suffering from depression, I can understand how shitty peoples "sympathy" is and as someone currently on the "wrong side" of depression (somehow assuming that depression has sides) I'm pleased to hear you're on top of it.

Either way, digital and audio copies of Mogworld? Sold. Mogworld was by far my favorite book of the last few years. In regards to the chatlogs, couldn't you just manipulate your voice to make it sound more "digital" in the recording program of your choice?

I'm always kinda crappy at ending long comment thingies like this (good thing I don't want to be a writer) so, on the off chance you do end up reading this, uh, good job and erm... something.

  49. I wish I could do more than just say the overheard phrase "I'm sorry; I hope things get better" but that's sadly all I can do as an anonymous outsider to your personal life. And as a reader on the internet, which kinda sucks because you've indirectly helped me through a lot. I suffered from depression for a few years (it still hits hard at times because it truly never does go away). During that time, Zero Punctuation was a 5 minute break of happiness from hell.

Then earlier this year, a friend introduced me to the Chzo and 1213 games. If it weren't for those little games, I probably would have had a harder time coping with the sudden passing of my father in January. I had to fly home for the funeral and having something else to do that I enjoyed to focus on was a way to just relax a bit from grieving. I even began writing an analysis on the Chzo series as a distraction/outlet because I remember you mentioning about how you wanted someone to write one in one of the game commentaries. I actually had quite a bit written down before it drifted onto my long "Things I Want to Do" list. I became too intimidated by trying to fully understand and analyze Trilby to continue, and haven't touched the document since August.

Then, of course, seeing how successful and well-known you have become while just doing what you enjoy and passionate about has inspired me. I have begun taking more career-related risks in order to see what I can do. It's landed me a few promising opportunities that I probably would not have tried for before.

So thank you for all you've done. Not just for me, but for the community in general. I feel like I owe you so much more for it all, but I can't give anything else other than a few kind words, regardless if you want them or not.

    Thank you, Yathzee, for everything.

P.S: Can't wait to play the new game and read the new novel. Also, do tell Mark that he does a fantastic job. Songs from Trilby's Notes and 6 Days have pretty much made up every noise my cell phone makes since about February. The "Death" melody from Trilby's Notes is drilled into all my co-workers heads. They all subconsciously hum it now whenever I get a text message, which amuses me oh so much.

  50. Looking forward to the audio book dude. I'll even purchase it, with moneys!
I still check here to see if you guys have made any more podcasts as they always make me laugh :-)

  51. Glad to hear you're doing better! I just finished playing through the DeFoe Quadrilogy again (third time now, last time was in 2009, I think) and I was shocked to see that thing Quovak wrote in the Let's Play Archive!! I still enjoy those games so much that I can't understand how that guy tore them to shreds like that! Well... whatever. Matter of personal taste, I guess. (Like Steph up there, two posts over this comment, I have some music of the games on my cellphone and the awesome harpsichord tune is my standard ringtone for incoming calls.)

Awesome to hear that there's a new game underway! I personally hope for another Trilby appearance but... let me guess... it's something completely different, right? :)

Oh, and I still have Mogworld on my shelf. Fuelled by the admiration of the Chzo games, I might just start actually reading the thing. :)

Wish you a great week, man!

  62. Is it just depression? Or do you suffer from anxiety as well? I know you said not to post anything but you know that the entire gaming community loves your stuff. You put into words what we all feel in our hearts while making us laugh at the same time :D. I used to think of myself as a word smith of sorts until I started watching Zero Punctuation but you made me realise that there is a whole other level of self expression. I think a lot of critics probably go through what your going through at one stage or another. Maybe try something else for while like freestyle rapping, drop some tracks, I know alot of people would pay to see that!

  63. Not regularly but still do. Where do we sign the petition. I really want to read it but hate paying full price. 66. unfortunately depression is a common side-effect of being smarter than most of the people around you, not being able to relate. Totally sympathise.
I guess I'll stop waiting for the digital version then and just get the print version. I'd hold out for the audio book but you know.. that could be years away! On the other hand, my list of 'read immediately' books is pretty long atm, I'll see where you're at once they are through.
Good luck, make sure to watch plenty of your favourite episodes of whatever cheesy old show is your guilty pleasure (Next Gen for some reason is my favourite fodder for when I'm depressed. Makes no sense.)
    Make it so..

  74. No sympathy eh? Alright. How about pressure to record audiobook? External stimulus to influence you to action. Let's try that. Get on it you lazy bastard! And I hereby set this challenge: see how quickly you can read 350 pages of prose. I know you're probably tempted to try and read it at the speed of ZP or even slower, but fight the urge; it behoves you to make it so fast your tongue cramps up and listeners' ears bleed from vibrating too fast.
(disclaimer: have been there too, due understanding, hate pity also &c. don't flame this comment, people).

    ReplyDelete
  75. look, i dont want this to go down the wrong way, but YOU CRAFTY BASTARD. if you were that depressed, why tell everyone then stoically say "but dont be sympathetic." i may be a little late in answering but ive read enough XP and enough ZP to know what kind of person you are. (unless you fake your personality in those, which honestly probably isn't it). but you probably are a LITTLE deppressed, so ill say this ; you are friggin' AWESOME. i didn't treat games the way i do now until i found your reviews. you don't treat gaming as a recreational pastime, you treat it like a culture, or a religion, and give respect as such. and you have done this for so many other people. you've become more famous than thomas eddison! i REALLY want the book, but i can't bloody shop online yet, being 16. oh, and im now making this my home page. just to spite you. and because you are the one fad that for me, will NEVER wear out. you are litteraly a genius. because you can see things differently. and make other people see things the way you see them. and once we've seen it your way, you don't go back. and i find a way to get over a little depression is to go back a few years. look over past acheivements. which would take some time for you. if this is a little late, im sorry but i had to say something to my absolutely favourite internet personality. if you read this, thank you for your time.

    ReplyDelete
  76. For the chat log parts in the audio book, you could just have a little blip at the start of every message, similar sounding to any chat program when you get spoken to and the program's window isn't active, and explain it the first time it appears

    ReplyDelete
  77. You always make my day! If I'm feeling down or aggravated at something I'll watch some ZP and it'll totally derail my bad mood with your delicious accent!

I've been watching ZP on youTube for almost 2 years now, and I've infected a group at my old college called G.A.M.E. (Games And Misc Entertainment) club at the with ZP fandom!

Just today I saw a reference to this page from the facebook group, somehow I missed it before! On that note, enjoyed your snippet on Star Wars, have you considered doing a snippet on Lord Of The Rings Online? It's free to play now, tho it's not as good as it once was In My Humble Opinion.

Depression sucks, I've been slipping into one due to losing my income in December, and then my boyfriend in January. On the up side I've gotten a job in Alaska for the summer and I'll be catching boat loads of fish!
I know its super short notice, but it would be awesome to listen to your soon-to-be-AudioBook while I'm up there! Judging by your speaking abilities I'm sure you could finish before I have to go home to Texas!

So yea in summary, OY YAHTZEE! I love your work!!

The enchanted BS's will high alch for just more than 10k ea. But only expense 7k +/- ea. That is certainly a surplus of 3k ea cartoonsfilms.com. As soon as you are able to craft dragon hides these will sell handsomely at the GE, if not they'll high alch quite nicely finish result = Rich.
