Go to www.teamfortress.com. There's an image at the top of the page showing the 9 different characters. When you mouse over each character they become highlighted, indicating that they can be clicked on to go to their profile page.
And if you very slowly move the mouse cursor from one character to another, you'll find there's a tiny little gap as you cross from one character to the next. A brief moment when both characters become de-highlighted. Like there's a little channel separating the hotspots. This happens everywhere where one character's graphic joins another.
BUT.
There is one exception: the join between the Scout and the Soldier. If you mouse over and highlight the Scout and slowly scroll over to the Soldier, or vice versa, one highlights and the other simultaneously de-highlights. There is no separating border where both become de-highlighted.
If you mouse over the Scout and move to the Pyro, the gap is there. If you mouse over the Soldier and move to the Engineer, the gap is there. If you mouse over any other character and move to its next-door neighbour, every single time, there is a gap. It's just between the Scout and Soldier where there is no gap. It is impossible to position your mouse between them without highlighting either.
WHAT
DOES
THIS
MEAN
It mean our good old Yahtzee just emptied his bottle of cider and washed it down with a glass of rum.
ReplyDeleteGood on you partner!
There is a new mod for Deus ex called new vision, and it makes a replay tolerable.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.pcgamer.com/2012/11/29/deus-ex-new-vision-mod/
On a side note what is your cure for a hangover?
uh...happy new year?
ReplyDeleteyahtzee...
ReplyDeletego back to bed.
And here I thought Yahtzee didn't play Team Fortress 2.
ReplyDeleteI have your answer:
ReplyDeleteWithout too much technospeak, The Soldier does not have the same "outline" or barrier as the rest of the characters for some reason. Because of the way the characters are layered, it looks like the scout is in on it too, but you can tell that isn't the case by checking under his right (stage left) armpit. Because the Soldier has no outline AND him being above the scout in terms of perspective, rolling from him to the scout means there's no deselection beteween the two. Rolling from him to the Engi looks fine (has the deselection) because the Engi is on top.
TL,DR: BECAUSE OF FUCKING MAGICAL SPACE FAERIES.
Actually there is a gap between the scout and the soldier, if you increase the magnification of the webpage enough your mouse is able to move a small enough amount that you can pick up the gap. It's possible at 100% but easier at higher zoom levels
ReplyDeleteHalf Life 3
ReplyDeleteThis was the piece of information I was waiting for my entire short life. I can now die in peace.
ReplyDeleteIt means that you're the Kwisatz Haderach. Go forth young Atreides, and lead the Fremen to glory.
ReplyDeleteHe's right. I checked and he's totally right.
ReplyDeleteThere is a space.
ReplyDeleteNow go and paranoically double-check.

Yahtzee, you sly old fox, you're just playing god with the fans to see how minute a subject will provoke a reply, aren't you? ;)
ReplyDeleteGood job and cheers
See, whats funny to me is six months down the line, someone's going to read this and tell him to get more sleep.
ReplyDeleteOh lordi, we've lost him... He's lost himself. Tragic, so tragic, indeed. One of the greatest minds of the 21st century - lost.
ReplyDeleteParanoia setting in? Well, that's what happens when you have to systematically tear apart other peoples' much-loved games and then listen to them complain in droves every week.

ReplyDeleteThere's also no border between the lower half of the spy/demoman shoulder area, as well as between the medic's pouch and the demoman's head.
ReplyDeleteI would like to say this is an excellent blog that I have ever come across. Very informative. Please write more so that we can get more details.

Hey Yahtzee,
ReplyDeletewhat the DICK were you thinking when you nominated Spec Ops the Line as your GOTY? I bough it based on this recomendation and while it's an above-avarage military shooter it's not any kind of subversive statement you hyped it up to be. Ok, there was this one fairly poignant scene early on but soon it was back to the business of dispatching hordes of guys to the sound of one-liners and heavy metal. Interactive narrative experience MY ARSE. I had about as much fun with Bulletstorm, and Spec Ops does get oddly reminiscent of that game once you are joint by that Texas-accented hot-shot agent. No discussions on the nature of war and violence to be found.
So yeah, Yahtzee, you should definitely get more sleep. And lay off the liquer. And get your act together.
"I had about as much fun with Bulletstorm"
Deletelol, playing SpecOps to have fun
This comment reeks of a reply only thought up to try and get a reply from Yahtzee himself.
DeleteIt's cute that you think he actually reads this.
DeleteThere's a sweet spot right in the bend of the soldier's arm. (Spec Ops was incredible. One of the best experiences I've had with gaming narrative.)
ReplyDeleteIt means you have OCD. Welcome to the club.
ReplyDeleteHalf Life 3 confirmed.
ReplyDeleteKudos
DeleteYahtzee, you late 80's fun Cenobite, I have disturbing news!
ReplyDeleteA game was released a year ago on Steam and has completely slipped your radar. The game in question is PAYDAY: The Heist.
I find this rather disappointing because I've played the game multiple times and every time I do, I'm reminded of Resistance 3.
That's all I'm gonna say. Play it. You will get some SERIOUS Deja Vu.
Hey Yahtzee, I have a idea that many people I have asked believed to be a good idea and would like some advice from a reviewer that knows what he or she is talking about. Is there any chance you would read my idea? Thank you.
ReplyDeletejacobthe604@gmail.com
-Though I know you probably won't I still approve your ideas. The one time I didn't really listen, it felt like I drank battery acid mixed with diet sprite.
"a reviewer that knows what he or she is talking about."
DeleteI'm sure Yahtzee is a guy.
Yahtzee escaped from the mental hospital again...
ReplyDeleteNo, there is. However, between the Demoman and the Spy, there isn't a gap.
ReplyDeleteum, this may not be part of the discusion but i give you a tip if you will or are reading yahtzess book "jam" if you want a "happy ending" read to the end of the part where they find the aircraft carrier stop if you read through it you will be suffering from a whole world of depression like me i got done reading it five miutes ago and i have fuck load of work to do but i just feel so down because of the end of jam. SPOILER nobody dies
ReplyDeleteYahtzee,
ReplyDeleteIf this message does not reach you, congratulations you can sleep at night unlike me. If it does, I have found a seriously messed up, "thing." that I may have come close to associating as a game. The only thing going for it is an amazing story and a unique way of how the game-play ties into the story, if it is to be considered a game.
I need your opinion on this matter as it may interest you as well but, be warned this, "thing." is almost how you described Neverdead (confirm if this is a one word title) in that i both hate and love it at the same time.
You can reach me at maxlatura@gmail.com
Jesus Christ, your overanalysation was completely right.
ReplyDeletequite a while ago you wrote an article on how team fortress 2 is a great example of how to use silhouettes to define characters. i just saw something that reminded me of that article; iran's new stealth jet. check this thing out, its like they gave someone the design brief of "give us something cartoonishly evil" http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-21307019
ReplyDeleteTry putting your mouse near the bottom of the two, the scout and the soldier, but have it just above or on the sides of the Team Fortress logo. There's your gap, I think...
