Casting a pod

In case you weren't at trivia night yesterday and missed this, my next trivia night will only be one week away, on Tuesday the 19th, because there's been so much shuffling around lately and we're trying to get back to the regular two week schedule. So it's next week, and the one after that will be back to being two weeks apart.

Now. I've got a lovely surprise for you today. See, I used to quite enjoy recording podcasts with Yug and Matt but now they hardly do that ever, and I've been hankering to do a bit more unscripted stuff, so for those extremely valid reasons I recorded a test podcast with my friend Gabriel, with whom I frequently converse at the Mana Bar.

Now, full disclosure, this didn't exactly turn out to be the sparkling product I'd been hoping for, it does take a while to get going and when we do the subject does tend to stray constantly towards slightly blue areas. We didn't really have a list of topics or anything and I think if I pursued this then we'd definitely need a more defined structure to keep us in check in future. Also, there's a bit of an audio quality issue in that the podcast recorder was on the charger so there's a bit of an electric buzz in the background.

But for whatever it's worth, here's the experimental Yahtzee-Gabriel podcast. Topics include Gabe's recent trip to Japan, my new 3DS, which millionaire we'd most like to fight and the difficulties one encounters when attempting to bum guard dogs.

  3. I'm loving this. I'll definitely listen to more.

Keep the dark/edgy humour coming ;)

  6. About 10 minutes in, enjoying so far. Glad to have contributed a little with the tip on SoundCloud.

  7. Hilarious!
I can't wait for the next one.

  8. Hmm, if this became a regular thing I'd keep listening. So that's another vote for amused.

  9. That was amusing and somewhat soothing even. :D

  10. Best. Surprise. Ever.

I laughed so hard I scared my cat, you guys have the most awesome conversations. Definitely hoping for more~ <3 also Yahtzee’s sexy voice bit.. *fangirl giggle*

Anyway, I’ve listened some unscripted podcasts before, (they were from IGN or something, I don’t even remember) and it nearly put me to sleep, but this was sooooo much better. Bloody vagina references and all. Don’t change a damn thing.

  11. I've listened to it all the way through. Plenty of LOL moments. So do I win a prize for getting to the end?

Also can we expect more of this any time soon?

  12. I laughed a lot. Thanks for this, I hope that you guys continue making these.

  13. Yahtzee's 'sexy voice' section is how I will henceforth imagine creepers talking. Just for the line "take off that everything you're wearing"

  14. I was in the same room with Richard Garriott having a chat with him about Tabula Rasa some years ago. I'm sad I didn't snap to punching him in the head then.

Also, enjoyable podcast. Keep 'em coming.

  15. Hey Yahtzee. Came from reddit. I didn't ask you a creepy question though.

I listen to a lot of casts, gaming and otherwise. I wanna say you guys have some real chemistry. What I heard was genuine conversation with a lot of wit and humor. I also like the fact the it's uncensored because it feels more genuine as well.

Anyway, I like that it's all off-script because the banter is so good. I think it could use a little more structure and more defined themes, but that will probably come with time.

Good work. I'm looking forward to future experiments.

  16. I like the fact that its unscripted, I think unscripted shizz is the bizz nowadays. Like yogscast, they don't plan anything, they just shoot, roll and go with the flow.

And also its nice to actually learn some stuff about you from this podcast! But its nice, its groovy you're doing your own thing because I think the people around you seem to push your fans away.

  18. Off toppic:

    I tried this
    http://yes.thatcan.be/my/next/tweet/
on yahtzees twitter. Here are the best possible future tweets:

Valentines card idea: society of books in Brisbane know it's still good.

Apparently I'm eating Subway this afternoon, now four ways to me to the Mana Bar.

Blimey, we've seen five different stretch hummers driving through the ending?

I'm drawing the Mana Bar. Something else. So I'm using an equivalent of Lime?

A chance to repeat this to find the fly was at 6:30! Lots of variables. Mogworld launch event, this?

If you smug cunt, now four ways to support indie publishing! Not alcohol.

Let's see your fucking money. That means everyone else who did it with my sandwich. Never go out of March.

Yug somehow becoming even less coherent: Mogworld Q&A video this evening when thrown by Purcell.

  19. Now, a bit of constructive criticism:
While I liked that it was unscripted, the podcast definitely needs more structure and real topics, but I think you are aware of that. Also, while it was funny, I think there was too much "filth" that was not very clever. It is not that I feel offended or anything, but Yahtzee is best when talking about Pop-culture and it seems like you two have a good chemistry to build on that, but instead big parts of the podcast just seem to resemble the kind of talks I start having after five beers.
Which is not bad per se, but but, even though it was funny, there wasn't a lot of actually interesting things you talked about.

All in all I was entertained enough to listen to the end, but without substance and real topics, I fear it will get boring very soon. I am not really worried about that though seeing that this was only a test and has a lot of potential. So I hope you two continue doing podcasts.

Oh, and 1) Yahtzees fake-Japanese sounded quite Japanese 2) Kuso does mean sth like shit.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Despite the filth, I overall enjoyed it.

It's clear you two have chemistry (no, not that kind (or maybe yes that kind; I wouldn't know)), and it's quite enjoyable to hear you extemporaneously bullshitting for about 45 minutes. It seems evident to me that you're trying to entertain each other, and we're along for the ride.

Having a handful of topics to return to once you jump the rails would be helpful.

I did have to go the extra mile to actually hear the podcast, thanks to the idiocy of Soundcloud. Apparently it's all the rage among children these days to build your pages out of JavaScript retrieved from twenty seven different domains, each of which needs to be whitelisted before the playback widget will deign to run. Apparently just sending the correct MIME type and letting the browser handle it locally is simply too hard.

Oh, and zentai suits can be custom made to order. So don't let that stop you.

  21. Entertaining enough that I listened through the end, and wanted to hear more. I especially liked everything involving the bar, very interesting. I also liked that the podcast was a natural conversation.

I'm trying to think of what I didn't like...hmm. There may have been some threads that got dropped in the flow of conversation that I thought would have been interesting. But I guess that's the nature of the medium.

I'm curious about how much the podcast resembles everyday conversations for these guys. Sounds like they do not lead dull lives.

I'm not sure what kind of "structure" other commenters are suggesting. Topics? Gimmicks? Episodes?

I don't really have suggestions, since What The Fuck Do I Know Since I'm Some Random Internet Fuckwit, but I'm curious to listen to you guys play a video game (although that might step on the toes of Zero Punctuation) or watch a movie or something.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'd like more of this.
You two have a good chemistry.

Also, while I'm here I might as well say I read your book, and, yeah, I liked it.

  23. About that hentai manga discussion, where the lack of shame involved was brought up.
There are some things which people should be made to feel bad for looking at. That particular one mentioned is one of them.

I can so relate, "How did we get on this topic?"

Good stuff, looking forward to more.

  26. Moar.

But, really, I enjoyed it. I just wished it was downloadable so I could've listened to it on the go.

    And "filth"? What filth? (Shush).

  27. Hilarious talk! Off-topic conversations are always funny.

    Keep em' coming!

  28. Just wanted to say you have some of the most top-notch, caustic humor I've ever heard! My metaphorical hat of awesomeness goes off to you, sir. May wild space monkeys continue to rain prosperity upon you :P Now I must follow your nifty blog thing.

It almost made me feel normal.

  32. Good podcast, but sadly disappointed with your misinformation with regards to the guard dog sex act! The event occurred in Falmouth, not too far from where my parents live, and started just being amusing local news, eventually made national coverage.

Here's the story in full, I find the real version even funnier XD

  35. Yahztee, you enibri(f)dated *Playing ping pong with the oblong* white wall of roses, when oh when is that Hitchhiker's Guide esque audio treatment of Mogworld going into production?

  36. I hope you do more podcasts. Sounds like you two could just sit in a room talking all day and it wouldn't stop being entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  37. really amusing!
you guys talk about shit other podcasts are too afraid to start talking about fearing they will lose audience but you guys obviously gained audience instead of losing

    ReplyDelete
  38. Honestly, the unedited quality of the podcast, was, imho, one of the best things about it. I didn't mind at all when the conversation went off on a tangent, and I felt those tangents were incredibly entertaining. I listen to several podcasts, and this reminds me a bit of Smodcast, but a bit less filthy and more nerdy, which is like, the perfect podcast for me. I would definately enjoy hearing more of these, and please, don't add structure as it detracts from the "realness" of the conversation.

  40. I think one of the creepy questions was a take off on Zombieland. When Tallahassee meets Bill Murray he says "I've been watching you way before i knew how to masterbate! not that its connected..." They changed it up, and probably thought they were being clever/funny yet ended up creepy.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oops, actual quote is " I've been watching you since I was like... Since I could masturbate. I mean, not that they're connected." Yet you get the idea.

    ReplyDelete
  42. this podcast doesn't hold a candle to the podcasts you made for australian gamer with yug and matt. Sorry, you guys have poor dynamics, there is no straight man, like yug in in your australian gamer podcasts, you can't all be edgy goofballs the conversation dies out, as you 2 managed to prove time and time again in this podcast.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Not that I'm a prude or anything but gabe says fuck like it's going out of style.

At least Mr Croshaw is resonably creative with his profanity.

Otherwise meaningless, meandering conversations are the standard for podcast conversations. Scripts sound well, scripted and having an agenda of discusssion topics ends up sounding like discourse at a stilted town meeting.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I liked this. It'd be great if you guys did more of them. Maybe if you had some kind of checklist of things you want to discuss, so when the conversation does go off-topic you can look back and be like "right, so, next thing then".

As someone else said, yeah, Hentai St would be something like Hentai Doori (pronounced like door, then ri). And kuso does mean shit, or rather is a general word for some kind of expletive you say out of frustration (I've seen "rats!" translated as kuso before). I really enjoyed Gabe's description of inner Tokyo - the crowds are pretty insane here, and peak hour is very much like the second coming of hell.

  45. I loved this podcast, was quite humerous. And yes, I am an international listener, but don't consider myself a poor bastard. You guys are genuinely funny, and not having a BS censor and chopping out all the good bits.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I liked it.. it was original and funny and there hasn't been much new stuff on here for ages (ZPs aside).

    ReplyDelete
  47. liked it. THIS should be an escapist thing instead of the awkward podcast with the annoying gearbox guy or the annoying jimquisition thing

    ReplyDelete
  48. Very very funny podcast. Loved the video game diseases. Definitely keep it up.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Was worth the 3 quarter hour listen at 1am in the morning, I honestly laughed my ass off. The way you guys go off topic really does make it much more natural instead of keeping to one topic, because then it just becomes a bit out of character.

    Post another podcast soon!

    ReplyDelete
  50. you need to record one a day each an hour long and must be animated like the ricky gervais podcasts. its a little demanding but it must be done! be my slave!

  51. also im listening to this as an alternative to the royal wedding. thats a nice comparison :)
